Climate change is here, and it is something we all need to come together to make any kind of impact. As one of the most active areas of the household for energy consumption, the kitchen has many areas to consider, and to decipher where the largest decrease in carbon footprint can be made.
The majority of this is due to inefficiencies with our treatment of food, water and electricity, so we need to make changes in the way we live now, and one of the easiest rooms to do this in is the kitchen. As an added benefit, it also cuts costs, and you can see an immediate difference giving you peace of mind.
We try to ensure our customers kitchens are of low impact to the environment and have a collection of ideas below for you to consider to make yours a more environmentally friendly kitchen.
1) Organise your food cupboards
Each year, hundreds of thousands of tonnes of food products are wasted throughout the world, and a way around making an impact on your waste is to organise your cupboards. Buying less to ‘store’ and working out what you actually need for the meals planned this week will not only help you reduce your food waste, but you will also notice a financial benefit.
2) Green appliances – green kitchen
Installing appliances with a good energy rating will make a large difference to the efficiency of your home. Regular use and the age of the machine in question will decrease the impact they make over time, so it is a good idea to keep on top of them. Dishwashers use less water than handwashing too, consider which programme is needed for each wash, so you can save your hands from drying out.
3) Compost your waste
A kitchen composter outside your door is a great way of providing yourself with great soil for the garden, and it means that any foodstuffs that have turned don’t go to waste. You could consider a waste disposal unit.
4) Use seasonal produce
Seasonal produce purchased locally has a low carbon footprint and is often a lot fresher than supermarket goods.
5) Use filter water
Instead of buying expensive bottled water, and increasing plastic consumption, obtain a water filter or install a filter tap. This can include a all in one filter and boiling water tap, no more boiling kettles either. Your carbon footprint and your expenses will both lower.
